Evapotranspiration estimation in rain gardens using soil moisture sensors

Rain gardens are increasing in use as the shift from gray to green infrastructure continues. Water that enters a rain garden is removed by three mechanisms: overflow an outlet, percolation underlying soil, and evapotranspiration (ET) atmosphere. Despite importance of ET aiding recover void space during time between storm events, it not often measured or calculated because so difficult do so. This paper explores soil moisture sensors estimate ET, since they relatively inexpensive purchase install. Three weighing lysimeters Villanova, PA, were used for this study. Over 3-yr study period daily was each dry day summed events >25 mm. The cumulative changes readings interevent at depths compared with concurrent lysimeter weight readings. Cumulative change found be strongly correlated different media drainage types. Using two top bottom column provided similar result using all reading depths. best single depth lysimeter. estimates via tracking performed uncalibrated potential estimates, but well calibrated estimates.
